Getting Started Starting your own home-grow can be intimidating, that's why we have provided this helpful guide to all of our fans to help navigate all the difficult and confusing decisions to make while growing for the first time. This guide will be geared toward novice growers with little to no experience, for more experienced growers we recommend sticking with the set up your are comfortable with. By the end of this guide you will have all of the information you need in order to set up your grow for either clones or plants from seed. 01 Where to Grow Indoor? Outdoor? It is a commonly held belief that Cannabis grown indoor is better than sun-grown flower; at Eighth Brother, we couldn't disagree more, we believe sun-grown flower has a special quality to it that just can't quite be achieved growing indoor. For the purposes of this guide we will be giving tips for an indoor grow so that we can limit as many variables as possible for first time growers and yield more consistent results. Note that growing outdoor may be illegal in certain jurisdictions, please always check your local regulations before doing anything with cannabis. For beginners, we suggest doing a small grow indoor with about 6 plants. We do not recommend attempting hydroponics if your are inexperienced. Make sure your area is out of reach of children, away from nosey neighbors, and safe from predators (rats, gophers, birds, pests). The environment in which you choose to grow will affect your final product substantially. If you live in an area with extreme heat or cold we recommend doing an indoor grow to be able to better regulate temperatures (extreme temperatures can kill your plants). Make sure you can control the humidity in your grow area; too high humidity can cause mold, too low and your plants will dry out. 02 Selecting Your Substrate Substrate? What's That? Substrate is the medium you are going to be growing your plants in. Soil, rock wool, coconut coir, peat moss, clay pebbles, and perlite are all examples of commonly used cannabis substrates. Our recommendation is to pick up some soil from your local hydroponics store. The best soil for marijuana plants is a well-draining mixture, rich in organic matter, and has a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. The ideal soil composition includes a mixture of and other soil additives compost. To make it easier on first time growers we suggest just starting with a mixture from your local hydroponics store. Some popular products are: Canna Terra Professional, Plagron All-Mix, and Biobizz All-Mix. 03 What Type of Lights? What Type and When to Run Them? Which lights are best for growing cannabis is a hotly debated topic within the growing community. For the purposes of this guide, we will only recommend the most affordable solutions, ignoring some of the more expensive options. We will cover a few different options for lights -The most budget option for grow lights will be your standard Florescent light bulbs; these work but they do not have the full-spectrum of light or necessary power for cannabis plants to hit their maximum yield. We only recommend this option for shoestring budget, if you can spend absolutely $0 on lights. These lights are cheap; they will have high heat output, limited light spectrum, and they will be affordable to run 24/7, but your plants may not reach the same size as with other options. -The next option we would recommend is basic LED (Light Emitting Diode) Lights. These will be slightly more expensive but are commonly found and you may already have them on hand. These lights will have a similar light spectrum to florescent lighting but will have far lower heat output and will be more affordable on your electric bill. -The #1 option we recommend for your first grow is using LED Grow Lights. These lights offer the best of both worlds as they are made specifically for indoor farming. They have a more full spectrum light output to make your plants grow happily, they have low heat output so they won't dry your plants out, and they are still very affordable to run in terms of electricity. These lights have the added benefit of not burning off your humidity, while traditional lights burn much hotter making difficult to maintain a stable humidity. These are the most expensive lights of the three so if you don't mind spending the extra cash these will definitely yield you the best results. 04 Nutrients... Do I Need Those? I'm Not a Biologist, Where do I Start? Picking your nutrients can be one of the most intimidating parts of doing your first grow. Don't worry though! With our guide your won't need a degree in botany to decide what type of food to feed your baby plants. Picking the right nutrients is difficult, that's why we are here to help guide you as you get everything ready for your first grow. There are many different types of nutrients available on the market, in this guide we will focus only on affordable environmentally friendly solutions that will be easy for a novice to execute. ​ When looking at nutrients there are commonly two types: Organic and Inorganic. Organic is going to contain living organisms and composted material that is nutrient rich and ready for your plant to absorb. Inorganic nutrients are commonly minced minerals that are artificially created; these can have negative impact on soil composition and surrounding environment. We recommend using avoiding the use of nutrients until well out of the seedling stage, using organic nutrients rich in nitrogen during the vegetative state, and using nutrients higher in phosphorous and potassium during the flowering stage. There are many nutrients that are available commercially. HGV and Athena Salts are some of the most affordable options. It is also important to not add too much fertilizer during growth and to not add any nutrients or fertilizer during the last week of growth to flush the nutrients out of the plant and improve the final product’s flavor.

Nursery Time - Seedlings and Sprouts Now that you've got your plants in the ground it should just be a matter of days before they start to sprout. This section will show you how to set up your seedlings depending on the type of grow you are starting. If you're starting from clones you should be able to skip this section 01 Lighting Your Plants Getting the right amount of light **To accelerate root growth ensure the soil is 2-5 degrees warmer than the ambient air temperature. Your seedlings can be very sensitive to light, too much or too little could affect the way they grow. During this stage, it's ideal to provide 16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness. How far to position your lights from the canopy of your plants will vary depending on what type of light source you've selected. It is important to ensure the heat from your lights is not drying out your soil, keep a close eye on this as the heat from the bulbs can cause damage to leaves if positioned incorrectly. If you don't have your grow lights yet, we have tips for which ones to get in our Getting Started Section. ​ LED Grow Lights: 24-36 inches Standard LED: 12-24 inches High Power CFL Lamps: 12-16 inches ​ Fluorescent Tubes or bulbs: 2-6 inches ​ The light requirements of your plants will change as they grow. The rule of thumb is that the distance from the canopy will increase as the plants grow. Each lighting source is different and minor adjustments may be needed depending on the strength of your light and the environment you're growing in. If using reflectors, position your lights slightly higher than normal since there is more light available in the area. 02 Moistness Do not over water your plants! During the seedling stage, your plant puts most of its energy into growing a strong root system, good moisture content is essential to this stage of development. Too dry and your roots will be weak, too moist and the water will displace the oxygen in your soil causing your plants to suffocate or grow mold. 03 Preventing Mold Growth Keepin' It Clean Young plants, especially those with weak roots can be susceptible to root rot. Overwatering can cause root rot, so it is crucial to ensure there is a steady moderate supply of water to your seedlings. Root rot can be caused by organisms such as parasitic oomycetes, algae, fungi, and bacteria. The symptoms of root rot will be similar no matter the source. Root rot may be visible on the surface of your soil; symptoms are more likely to include drooping leaves, burnt leaf tips or edges, brown or yellow spots, plants absorbing less water, and leaves dying and falling off. The roots themselves may be twisted or tangled; typically root rot looks like boogers or goo on your roots , clear these plants out quickly to prevent the infection from spreading to your whole crop. Whole crops can be destroyed in a single weekend so it is important to eliminate mold as soon as possible. 04 Evaluating Your Progress How We Doin? The seedling stage should take about 3-5 weeks to complete. At this stage, your plants should be about 3-5 inches tall, and the roots should be well established. Plants growing too rapidly (long and skinny) could have inadequate nutrients or light. When plants don't have enough light they grow stocks more rapidly, reaching out to the light source causing stretching. Surprisingly, too much light can also cause stretching, this is why we recommend a 16-hour window of light for your seedlings. If you have some skinny seedlings that you would like to save; you can try replanting them in fresh soil. deeper in the soil than before. The portion of the stock that is underground will start to grow roots, creating a more stable stock for your plant to grow from, If everything is looking good at this point, you're ready for the next step! In the next few weeks, your plant will move to the vegetative stage, it will switch from investing the majority of its resources in its roots to investing in leaves instead.

If you are more experienced, now would be the time to deploy and preventive fungacides, neem oil, or other natural pesticides if you choose to use them. 02 Supporting your Plants Braces and support structures It can be helpful to create a support structure or braces for your plants as they grow. Now would be a good time to do this; you can deploy netting or stakes in the soil to help your plants stay standing up perfectly straight. 03 Final Check Up until this point you should have been running your vegetative plants on 24 hr/day light or only brief periods of darkness. As your plants are getting bigger it is important to ensure your area is not getting over crowded, this can increase risk of mold and stifle the growth of your plants. 04 The Flip Starting the Flowering Stage In order to force your plant to start growing buds, you essentially need convince it the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. To do this, you give your plants about 10-12 hours of darkness per day. This will tell the plants it is time to start producing buds. This process should take about 7-9 weeks before your bud is ready to harvest. Be careful letting your plant flower for too long as it will eventually start to seed itself and ruin your crop.

When growing cannabis, only the female plants produce the bud. If you don't remove the males from your crop, you can fertilize the females, resulting in seeded buds. This section will teach you how to identify male plants, separate them from the females, and prevent your female plants from going to seed. 01 Fertilization Bow chicka wow-wow Many people don't realize that cannabis plants come in both male and female form. The cannabis you know and love is the product of the unfertilized female plant, the goal is to get all of your females to the end of the growing cycles without being fertilized. To do this it is necessary to remove all male plants from the growing area. It is important to note that if any males are left in the growing area, your female plants will become fertilized and bare seeds. Males pollinate female plants using pollen sacks that grow from their stocks, we will show you how to use these to identify males and females. 02 Males Pictured to the right is a male plant in vegetative state. The pollen sacks are the bulbous shapes in the pit of the branch. One can identify male plants early on by one key feature. About 8 weeks into your grow if you inspect the elbow pits where your branches meet the stock, you should be able to see the start of either pollen sacks or female stigma. If you see any pollen sacks immediately remove those plants from your grow. These plants have little use and can be disposed of or used for compost. If you would like more seeds, you can grow male plants to term and harvest seeds, just make sure you clean aggressively between working with females and males so as not to cross-contaminate. 03 Females Pictured to the Left is the Female Stigma The stigma can be found in the same spot you would look for pollen sacks. Rather than a round bulb like the pollen sacks, stigmas appear as a pair of white frosty hairs. Stigmas can also be visible to the eye within the first 8 weeks of your grow. 04 Hermaphrotidic Cannabis Plants Some plants can be even fertilize themselves! There are a few scenarios in which a plant can fertilize itself, even if male plants are not present. One scenario could be that your plant is hermaphroditic, meaning that it manifests the characteristics of both male and female plants. Both stigma and pollen sacks may be visible at different areas of the plant or they may both be present at the same site. You will want to remove those plants from your grow, as they will fertilize your females and won't produce good bud. We don't recommend using the seeds from these plants, there could be genetic traits that you don't want passed on. Cannabis plants can also become hermaphroditic during their lifespan, so it is important to continue carefully monitoring your plants all the way through the flowing stage. If you discover one of your plants has begun producing pollen sacks when you are close to flowering, they can be sprayed with water, carefully clipped, and removed from the plant. Do not damage pollen sacks when removing as this could cause pollen to be released those inseminating your female plants and be sure that the plant is still producing stigma.

Transferring to Pots Transferring your baby plants into a bigger pot will be a necessary step during the growth process. This is required in order to provide more space to the plant's roots, allowing them to spread more widely. This will prevent root tangling (rootbound), increase your plant's eventual yield, and give it access to more nutrients. 01 When to Transfer You likely started your plants in a small pot or even a cup, and after about 3-4 weeks they are sure to outgrow their container and be ready to transfer to larger pots. 02 Your First Transfer Project Name For your first transfer, you can move the plant from your first container to a 3-gallon pot being careful not to damage the root system. If you have any additional soil amendments or root growth promoters like mycorrhiza now would be the time to add them. 03 Another One? Project Name If it has been 4 weeks since your first transfer and you notice your plants are growing very quickly, you may need to transfer them into even larger pots like 7-gallon pots. Generally, the root systems of plants expand outward about as far as the branches reach, so if your leaves are starting to hang over the side of the pot too much, you may be close to needing a larger pot, as your roots are still trying to grow outwardly. 04 Final Checks Project Name Make sure the pot you transfer into is sufficiently deep for your plant's roots and has adequate drainage so your roots don't rot. Perform your final transfer 2-4 weeks before entering the flowering stage. You will likely only need to do this 1-2 times total depending on the size of your plants.
